An announcement: The surlyville/Surly bikes link has been fixed. They have new colors and such for those of you who care. Also, it appears that Surly has raised some of their prices. Go figure.
I have a birthday request. I want all of you to answer a question for me.
Name a job that you would like to have. Don't think about career, and how you would support yourself; just a job you would like to have, maybe for just a week, even. For example, I have always wanted to work on a trash truck, for a couple weeks. Think of all the cool junk people throw out!
If you have a couple ideas and cannot decide, feel free to put a couple up. Also, please explain why you would want his job. Once again, it could be a job you would want forever, or one you would just have for a week. Bus driver, Zamboni driver, wrecking ball operator, lobster fishermen, sailor, massage therapist, doctor, sky-scraper window washer, trucker, train conductor, cop, interior designer, bodyguard, teacher, whatever you want!!!!!!!
You know it's a bad headwind when you have to pedal to go downhill.

Firsties!
Book critic
Being paid to read would be the shiz.
Run a bike shop/cafe in middle of nowhere Italy, as long as it's on the ocean. Maybe i can start an international CRC satellite shop.
I want to test hotels. Sort of like Devin's book critic job... but you get paid to go stay in some of the finest hotels all over the world... hmm. sounds ideal.
Potter. It's the job I'd have if I had the talent and the patience and the will and the mindset. I think being paid to make something with my hands would be a wonderful way to make a living. Furthermore, it's something I do as a hobby right now. Happy 19th birthday, Alex. As always, I am mighty impressed.
Cheers and good cycling,
Mark
first of all, HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALEX!!
i can't pick one but...cafe/art shop called "the coffee shop" somewhere in europe.(for simply my own amusement, as "coffee-shops" are code for drug trade in the netherlands). A self portrait art studio where people come in, strip down their clothing, and i throw paint at them as they run around a room covered in white paper. Also, working in a rescue helicopter in the ocean. I'd be the on strapped to the harness as i was plunged into the sea to hold hands with the drowning fellow and hoist them back upto safety to fly off into the distance. And paid to stay on an island to chill and watch wildlife (my old housefellow did that!)
Happy Birthday Alex.
I would like to be an outdoor guide. But you likely knew that already.
ALEXXXX!!!!!!!!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!! and if i could, i would like to be someone who gets paid to travel around the world!
from your best friend
This is so great! Keep em coming! Amelia, I still don't know which amelia you are!?
Who is media student?
your best friend!!
ps. have you taken a shower since you left??
hay, happy birthday
i think being a think being a roaming sitar player would be pretty awesome, but i guess I'll have to just say a roaming guitar player, sense i don't know how to play the sitar.
- i am listening to that classic Indian sitar player right now-
you humble brother
(the great)
Ha, Ha.
a stuntman. or, i guess, stuntwoman. Like the girl in death proof on the hood of the car. I think that would be an awesome job.
again, for the fifteenth time, happy birthday.
casey
this and the last amelia comment were tiny amelia. i changed my name for you too
Media student- I have alot of best friends. Give me more clues. There are people that get paid to travel, and a lot of different jobs.
and yes, I have taken several showers since I left.
Casey- Stuntwomen eh? Risky! Sweet though.
Nick Rizzle- if you ever start that bike shop, you have one mechanic who you can pay in food and coffee until you get on your feet.
Guys, this is great! Keep em coming!
Amelia, those all sound pretty good. I know a couple of people that got paid to live at research stations on islands off Alaska.
Anker- Being a traveling guitar player sounds like a good plan for a year after highschool (not to say that you couldn't go longer).
Devin- I like that. You made me think of food critic as a job.
Emily- I frickin love hotels. I love the feeling of walking into a strange room and dropping your bags on the floor, or maybe the bed. I have yet to stay in a motel or hotel on this trip, but I love em.
Alex- Barbaue? Outdoor guide huh? Yeah, I could see that coming.
Markalus- I can absolutely see you as a potter! I would buy a vase from you, man.
Happy 19 1/365th birthday.
Mine's got to be a smokejumper.
You parachute into a forest fire then put it out.
Skydiving and playing with fire. Skydiving WHILE playing with fire.
Talk about an adrenaline rush.
-David L.
David- That is an awesome job, man. Skydiving while playing with fire AND saving the forest!!!!! Whoa!!!!!!!
Happy belated birthday Alex!!
Wanna know something funny? It was your birthday HERE a full day before it was yuour birthday THERE, so it's even more belated!
I think Stripper, to see what its like. Or free-lance prostitute. Ranch-hand.
I also like the idea of being a potter for a day or a week, especially since I cant... pot...
I love reading your blogs! Everything you're doing sounds so exciting and challenging. I'm so proud to know you!

It snowed here today Alex. It has melted already but the point is that it snowed.
candy shop worker.
sweet, sweet candy
oh, devin!
hi Alex: I am at your house and am trying again to learn how to "blog". Maybe I can do it this time. sent you an email yesterday about "Warmspring" It could be useful, so read it!!
My ideal job would be to be a newspaper critic ( especialy for FOX)!
Special Effects coordinator and Emily, my sis had that job for a while she liked it a lot, they made her order room-service, but you have to travel a lot.
I've been thinking about this a lot lately and I don't really like the intro class for the major I was planning on doing. So i think my absolute dream job is owner/chef/waitress in a 24-hour diner with amazing food and singing waiters and art all over the walls and really interesting furniture. and all the food would be local and we would have a connection with microfinanced business in africa and southeast asia. There would be regulars and everyone would be welcomed and people have to be nice. OK this is long winded. But I actually want this to be my job.
alex--
happy birthday! hope you get a chance to carve a pumpkin this week!
i don't want to be a copycat, but i'd go with book critic, too. but it you asked me my favorite job, i'd say picking peaches, which i did for harry & david (the fruit of the month people) in ashland, or. the peaches were as big as grapefruits, and when you closed your eyes at night that's what you saw. plus, everyone sang in the orchard while they worked, it was a combo of spanish and the beatles, reflecting our workforce....
i'm gonna change mine. i want to work in emma's restaurant!
~memma
sorry this is late...
own a recording studio in a forest on the west coast. There would be a house attached, so I could mother all the musicians by cooking/help solve their problems.

Happy Bday Alex,
I have been reading your epic blog in bursts, but I am a bad friend for not commenting more often. I'll compensate by writing too much this time.
Hmmm. Jobs:
Rock Star - preferably something ska/punk and multilingual
Mythbusters - I would be like a kid in a dangerous candy store.
Investigative journalist that exposes high-level corruption in the government - because sneaky can = fun!
Did that snake sail through the gap in your bike's tubes, or am I picturing that incident wrong? Either way you are B.A.
Your description of that lady in Ardmore was hilarious.
My last post was a song reference - Ride On by Parliament. Nick Ray, the oracle of everything funk, didn't catch it, so I figured I'd just clarify that.
In answer to your question from the depths of time: Madison is ok, I'm basically taking 18 credits so I don't sleep much and get sick mucho, but the people are tight, I'm learning a lot and I get to build a hydrogen moped, (probably still not as eco-friendly as your bike, but fun stuff anyhow).
ANYHOW...
If the computer/camera setup keeps giving you lip, just email me a description of the problem: carlschroedl@gmail.com
and I'll try to help you in whatever way I can.
I love the pics your posting here.
I hate narcissistic holding-the-camera pictures too.
I am (slowly) reading Omnivore's Dilemma. Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser is good too.
Totally jealous of what you're doing. Enjoy each push of the pedal, even if it is going up a steep mountain pass.
2 more things:
1.) Who is the official Alex-endorsed pres. candidate in this election?
2.) Happy Halloween!
bicycling can be like hitting yourself in the head with a hammer. It always feels better when you stop. Keep on keeping on!
carl- Barack Obama has my vote.
I would work in a gas station so I could stay behind the glass and talk to people, or be a huge jerk
